Every piece of feedback a student receives does one of two things: it makes them think about the work, or it makes them feel something about themselves. Which one happens has very little to do with how much effort you put into writing it, and a lot to do with what sits alongside it.
In this module, we will examine what the research tells us about this difference: why some feedback keeps a student focused on the task in front of them, why some pulls their focus onto their ego instead, and what that means for how you use grades and comments in your own classroom.
Keep Students Task-Focused: Evaluate the difference between feedback that triggers ego-involvement and feedback that triggers task-involvement, and reflect on your current marking habits to identify where grades may be overshadowing the written comments your students receive.
